Mysterious Nyksund

.. once the second largest fishing port in Vesterålen. Nyksund was abandoned in 1972 because the port was too small to accommodate the needs of a growing fishing fleet. The remaining citizens were, together with the inhabitants of numerous small communities in the area, moved to the newly founded centre Myre, with its large harbour, good road connection and modern production facilities.
A large fire destroyed the port on the Nyksund Island in 1934. This house was built at the same time as the other brick houses along the port. The steam ship expedition used to be a combined office- and storage house and traded fish products to many European countries.
As with the other buildings in Nyksund, the house suffered a terrible decay after it was abandoned. People were paid by the government to move, on the condition that they did not return in 30 years.
A German social worker discovered Nyksund on a holiday trip. The 80's came with new activities to the "ghost town", and international youth projects were sponsored by the EU. Our house got a new roof, and from the middle of the decade, it served as a guest house for the youth-project. Not much is left of the project, but Nyksund had been "rediscovered". The project ended in the early 90's, but a few people began a careful restoring process in some buildings shortly afterwards.
From 1994, one house was used as a simple guest house for tourists, without water or drains. Today, several buildings in Nyksund are restored. Attempts are made at saving even the last of them from the decay. After 60 years without any building activity, the first new houses were built in Nyksund in 2003.
